MiEnergy is an owner of Minnesota Three LLC, a commercial-scale solar project. The three owners (Freeborn Mower Cooperative Services, People’s Energy Cooperative and MiEnergy) sell the electricity generated to Dairyland Power Cooperative. The 517 kW system produces enough energy to power about 6o homes. Minnesota Three came online in the summer of 2014.
MiEnergy’s predecessors Hawkeye REC and Tri-County Electric Cooperative were two of four electric cooperatives (Allamakee-Clayton Electric Cooperative and Heartland Power Cooperative) that formed this LLC over a decade ago to save money on purchases of utility equipment and to gain expertise in specialized services like engineering, safety compliance and vegetation management.
MiEnergy was one of 12 electric cooperative that banded together to form the Southern Minnesota Energy Cooperative, which purchased the Minnesota electric distribution assets of Alliant Energy in the summer of 2015. This is the first time in electric co-op history that a group of cooperatives worked together to buy out the territory of another electric utility.
STAR Energy Services, LLC was formed in 1997 by three electric cooperatives (Agralite Electric Cooperative, Runestone Electric Association and Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative) and has since been joined by five more (Meeker Cooperative Light & Power Association, Tri-County Electric Cooperative, Allamakee-Clayton Electric Cooperative, Hawkeye REC and Heartland Power Cooperative).
